What actually moves the number
Three things account for most of the spread inside each band.
1. The length and route of the gas line
Pipe is cheap; getting it from the only legal cylinder position to the appliance is not. A hob three metres from an outside wall and a hob on an internal island are the same appliance and a different job. See gas line installation.
2. New installation or an addition
Adding to an existing line means the line has to carry the new load, so the whole installation is re-tested and re-certified. That is usually cheaper than a new run, but it is not free.
3. How many appliances on one visit
Two appliances installed together share the line, the labour and the call-out, and the second certificate is R150 rather than R950. Doing them a year apart costs materially more.
Certificate of Compliance
R950 for the first appliance, R150 for each additional appliance on the same visit. A certificate is issued once the installation passes its pressure test — see gas certificate of compliance.
